| 1 Year Anniversary Update Wednesday, 8th October 2008 It's UNOFFICIAL! Scooters Pizza has set the record for the longest overland pizza delivery in the world. The 4 pizzas traveled on the back of Scooters Pizza founder, Carlo Gonzaga's BMW Adventure motorcycle from Johannesburg to London – a distance of 16'400 km's. The reason it's unofficial is because the guys at Guinness World Records reckon that delivering a pizza on a motorbike from Johannesburg to London, via deepest darkest Africa, over 39 days, is… well the same as getting on a business class plane seat and flying 16000km while your pizza sits cool and calm in the cargo bay. They wouldn’t give us a new world record so we’re claiming it ourselves. We'd like to see them try this! The team of four riders consisted of Carlo and Luigi Gonzaga, Founders of Scooters Pizza, Curt Silver, (A londonite) and Jay Currie, who rode his first motorbike just 7 months previously. The team left Mandela bridge on the 29th August 2007 and traveled up Africa’s East coast, through Sudan and Cairo, heading west into Brother Gudaffi’s country (Libya) and then hopped on a ferry from Tunisia to Southern Italy. From there the team delivered their two pizzas to Luigi's mother in the Italian town of Fidenza, where she has been living for 94 years! The team then headed off to find the Springbok rugby team playing in the world cup finals which necessitated a trip through the French Riviera (damn that was tough!) all the way down to Marseilles. John Smit (Springbok captain) accepted the pizza and credits winning the world cup to that pizza! (Well he should at least). From there to team headed through central France to the final delivery destination – South Africa House, here they delivered the 4th and final pizza to the South African Ambassador in London. Four riders. Four pizzas. 16 400km. Four sore butts. One unofficial world record. |
