Freezer

Need we say more. What trip would be complete without a mahusive freezer for chilled daquiri´s in the Sudan desert. Seriously though. This is a freezer. For real. It is a stock standard off the shelf freezer which we simply strapped to Carlo´s bike, and hoped for the best.

We´re actually taking five personal size margherita pizzas with us. We will cook the pizzas in one of our stores and then freeze them in a normal deep freeze. On the day we leave we will vacuum seal them in opaque plastic (so that the border guards cant see what´s inside!) and then simply pack them into the freezer.

The challenge with the freezer is that it will run off the bike battery only while the bike is running. After that it runs of a prayer! So either we had to ride all the time, or find a freezer that had enough insulation to keep the pizzas frozen while it was not plugged in. We also filled the freezer with 10kg of glycol (nice name for freezer blocks) to help the freezer while it was switched off. The problem we found was that all the freezers we tested only go to about -18 degrees. Simple solution: we insulated the temperature gauge so that the freezer was cheated into thinking it was always at about -6 degrees, which mean the compressor would continue to cool the unit. With a second thermometer placed in-between the pizzas we now can get the temperature down to -29 degrees, although the freezer its at -6. COOL!
We have done extensive tests where we have left the frezzer out in the open for 3 days and the pizzas where still below zero. The only problem is that jo´burg is not the Sudan. And Sudan is 42 degrees during the day. Jo´burg is 17. This is a small problem to which we don´t have the solution as yet.

The freezer is restrained from doing it´s own thing by three ratchet straps that are connected to the sub frame of the bike. We installed some shock absorption by means of two rubber car mats between the freezer and the bike - really hi tech stuff as you can see.

For those tech head out there the freezer is a 40L off orad freezer that uses a Danfoss compressor. It draws a max current of 6.3 amps and averages about 2.4 amps per hour. It is connected directly to the battery with an inline fuse, and an inline switch. The compressor cuts of power automatically when the voltage falls below 10.4V.

So far we have managed to break a plastic supporting plate.

We gotta ride to keep it cool.
